Award winning historian, the late Barbara W. Tuchman's Notes From China, Random House, 1972, covers her notes and impressions from a visit she made to China, soon after the Nixon visit, some very astute observations. Of course, the China of the nineteen-seventies was very different from the China of today. I especially enjoyed the article, "If Mao had come to Washington in 1945," that some of the tensions between our two nations might have been less, instead of waiting until the nineteen-seventies for Nixon's visit, but of course that remains speculative. She was invited to visit China in June 1972 and she had written and maintained an interest of Asia since before her 1933 graduation from Radcliffe College. It is only 79 pages, plus introduction and index.
P.S. The offer to come on a visit by Mao was never forwarded to Roosevelt by American officials.
Indeed whoever visits China, is impressed by its culture and traditions. Its uniqueness is what attracts people the most. It was a long time ago but still, china has a great impact on all around the world. I recently researched Barbara W. Tuchman during an MBA assignment help Dubai research.
@ezrahidaya Welcome to the forum, yes indeed, mystical, magical Cathay and as Tuchman states, the people were happy to welcome visitors. They were delightful, naturally curious in their welcome to my family in 1992, we told the children, "enjoy it, it's your only chance to know what celebrity feels like, all eyes on me please." I'm sure it would be different today, little tow heads not causing a stir.
On advice from Peter, I recently read "The China Mirage" and this incident is one of the turning points of the book.
Fun trivia: Julia Child was the assistant to Ambassador Hurley, if I remember correctly, and bundled up the message to send to Washington.
@steve Yes, Hurley delayed the message so that when it finally got to Roosevelt he was planning for Yalta. Just an interesting "what if," but Tuchman says earlier in the book that for the majority of Americans, commie bastard was one word at that time, so who knows if it mattered much? I plan on reading The China Mirage, but not until November.
