Hi!
Recently i acquired a restored export dish at an auction. I live in a region where temperatures differ a lot, and I'm worried that some "bubbles" started to appear at the piece. I dont know whether this happens in enameled porcelain in general, or it is some restoration paint peeling off.
It looks like it will start to flake off. I'm scared since i paid a good price for that piece. Someone can help identify what is happening and why? I don't know any restorers in my region.
Hi Julio, a lovely Qianlong plate. Sometimes hairlines appear due to internal tension but I have never seen a change in the decoration since it’s burned into the surface. It might be the color of a badly done restoration as you suspect.

I suspect whoever did the restoration applied a kind of varnish on the surface, a small piece flaked off but no decoration was affected. Maybe it was due to protect the glaze, but i've never saw anything of the kind.

If the plate has a simple hairline or a chip, the restorer, after fixing it, will apply a varnish for making the restoration invisible. The varnished area is much larger than the restored one, because the difference of color shade must be “diluted” in an area to make it less noticeable.
In time, that varnish will turn yellowish, making the looking of the plate very bad, hence it must be removed and renovated.
This is the reason why, when I find a restored piece, I always remove the varnish. I largely prefer a visible restoration than an invisible one, which is invisible only for a period, and then it will look much worst.
If you want to know if the dish has been restored or not, simply clean it with acetone, which will remove the varnish. Then, if restored, you could decide if return it or not.
You could also inspect the dish with a UV light, which will reveal if it has been overpainted or not.

Hi Giovanni!
I carefully peeled off the varnish buble with a precision blade. It came off easily and now unless you touch it, you cant see the area at all! Analising the piece more thoroughly, i fear the restorer used some form of bad "plastic" paint on the blue flowers on the border, i feel it would come out with the acetone, although I am curious to see what's underneath. Also, is there any risk the acetone would remove the gold guild of a piece?

Dear Julio,
acetone will not harm the dish at all, while you did risk to harm it by using a scraper.
If the restorer has been a professional one and used standard materials, the sprayed varnish will come out very easily and quick.
All what you could risk is the following. In case there are some missed parts, it all depends on the type of material that has been used to reconstruct it. A serious restorer here, especially for important items, will use a material that is removable (here, Bologna chalk and rabbit glue) that can simply be diluted in water, although not immediately. Most of restorers, for not so important items, do use a more stable material.
Then you can use acetone for removing the paint, and see what is below. Just do not insist too much on the reconstructed parts, if there are there.
Do not be afraid about the enamels, they are very strong. I do use paint stripper for removing old glues, and never had problems.
