Hello
Good day.
Recently i came a cross some chinese porcelains made in the 1900s encased in pewter.
I am quite curious on why was it encased? how they did it? When they started such encasing. So far, I could not find much information on this.
I hope someone can shed more light on this or point the way where to get more info. Appreciate it. Thank you.
Hi Tim,
I did have awhile ago an excellent write up on these pewter encased porcelain pieces. Unfortunately I can't find it!
From memory most of these originated out of Hong Kong during the 1970's. A number were made in Japan and decorated in HK.
The earliest one I have seen so far is from a fellow member 'Shine' who posted a jadeite jade and porcelain encased in pewter from the Tongzhi period.

Hi Tim,
If you search Chinese Porcelain Pewter Hong Kong you will come up with 100's of items for sale. They all seem to be made for or by CRDO. I understand this stands for China Refugee Development Organization believe this organization was set up to assist people fleeing mainland China. I seem to recall reading the organization had a long history back to Qing times but really came to the fore after the fall of the Nationalist Government in China. Unfortunately information on this organization seems to have been removed from the internet I recall reading about it some years ago. All that seems to be left on the net is pages of items for sale via ebay, Esty, ect ect. No real information about date's , who made it, where it was sold stuff that a collector might be interested in. I do recall this organization being in the news in the 70' and 80's when people fleeing Vietnam headed for Hong Kong as way into Britain and Australia. Quite why or how they made things for sale remains a mystery hope another member can shed some light or may have more luck searching than I have.
Michael
This piece around 1900’ish or thereabouts.
@imperialfinegems I have one with similar mark to your piece that I purchased at a gift shop new in 1978, except it is encased in brass and my round mark besides the Japanese porcelain ware decorated in Hong Kong, it has a diamond shape on top of square shape at center with T.F.F. in center.. It is oddly armorial decoration with a Russian/Austrian crowned double headed eagle design with quartered enameled armorial at center of eagle. Fantasy for decorative purposes only. I wonder if T.F.F. was a Hong Kong Company employing refugees like Michael writes about, is the mark on the original post Chinese or Japanese? Sharon
Hi Sharon P,
I do recall reading awhile back like Michael on these decorated pieces. However I just tried to find any link to TPP and found nothing at all!
Perhaps Michael has found something in the mean time.
Mark
@imperialfinegems It is T. F. F., I have 2.50 power reading eyeglasses scattered all over the house and they are indispensable.🤣
Hi Sharon,
My mistake. No wonder I couldn't find anything.
Apparantly after a little research I found the following information. During the cold War there was in place the 'cocum agreement'. This agreement restricted the trade with communist countries like China.
So porcelain makers in canton moved shop to Hong Kong. They were able to set up premises for very little outlay. Most apparently imported Japanese blanks and decorated them in Hong Kong.
This flourished up to the late 70's. However with ever rising price of property (now one of the highest in the world) eventually by the 80's they were all forced out of business.
Mark
@imperialfinegems That is good to know the history. Thank you.
Hello,
Just reread my post on this subject I think I made it sound like CRDO was the only pewter cased items I found. There were lots of other makers and included porcelain from Japan and one or two items from central Europe. It was just that I had been reading about CRDO in relation to something else a month or so ago. I was intrigued that CRDO had involved themselves in manufacturing from my previous reading they were a political organization. The trouble with the internet since it's complete commercialization is that scholarly knowledge is getting harder to find. Pages of Pinterest links that lead back to ebay or estsy seem to dominate. Wonder if the CRDO pages I read have been removed due to the current problems in Hong Kong and it's relationship with China.
Michael
Thank you all for such precious sharing. It is so amazing to know the journey of a piece of porcelain and how history has shaped it. Your sharing made me even more curious to dig for more information. Thanks again.
