Hello all:
A couple of weeks ago I posted a mystery item that I had had in my collection for 40 years, namely an Amsterdam Bont bowl dating to the early 18th century, and of whose true nature and origin I had only recently become aware. The concept of posting the occasional mystery item seemed popular and I am posting another one again this week. Again the first Forum member to get the correct answer will win a 20 cent voucher or coupon to be spent on a Catawiki item! My theme in posting these items is to use examples of Chinese pieces that I have had in my collection for a few years or for many years and whose true nature or origin only became apparent when people much more knowledgable than I revealed the secrets of the piece.
I won a figure (see photographs below) on a Chamberlain Antiques eBay auction. I rather liked it. The description of it posted by Josh Chamberlain was as follows: "This listing is for a beautiful and highly-detailed Chinese porcelain statue dating to the Kangxi period. The statue is of a woman standing upon a plinth and holding a basket of fruit in her hands. She is shown wearing a long robe and a bird atop her headdress. The exterior of the statue is finished in vibrant Sancai colored glazes that display beautifully. It stands 12.75 inches tall."
My question to you is what is incorrect about this description?
Regards,
Errol
She is a He...I accept cash. Best wishes
Hi Supioduo:
Very good but I have to rate you answer as an "incomplete." Can you give further details to win the full 20-cent coupon? I know you have your eye on a Catawiki item coming up on Monday.
Regards,
Errol
Aren’t these usually stoneware or pottery, not porcelain?
Be kind if I’m wrong! I want that voucher so much!
?
Hi Nic: No voucher for you I'm afraid. I have several figures of this type all in porcelain.

Hello ErrolL
Its not me on Catawiki. I've never bought there and looking at the threads here am unlikely to in the near future.
Best wishes
The figure appears to be a male dressed in female robes.
Also should the description have stated earthware sancai pottery rather than porcelain?
Mark
Devastated... again.
Does Sancai include 4 colours, or strictly 3?
I know, I’m grasping at straws...?
I think that what you mean dear Erroll is that it is a man as highlighted by others and that it is an enameled biscuit statue and not real porcelain.
Giovanni
Hello Julia and Mark:
My personal opinion is that this is not a Kangxi item. I think it is later than that although I would have preferred it to be Kangxi! If it had been Kangxi, I think you are correct that susancai would be the correct description. Gotheborg defines susancai as follows:
"Susancai (= "soft three color glaze") glazes are generally applied directly on biscuit fired (unglazed) porcelain. The style appeared during the end of the Ming dynasty and was at its most popular during the Kangxi reign. It is still produced and used today in South East Asia. The decoration is similar to the Tang dynasty (618-907) sancai ('three color') decoration made by copper, iron and cobalt oxide colored lead glazes applied on earthenware."
Although that is an interesting point it is still not the full answer I'm looking for here. Mark has provided an extra clue which if followed further should lead to a complete answer, but I'm still not awarding the 20-cent coupon!
Regards,
Errol
Dear Giovanni:
It was described as a glazed porcelain statue by Josh Chamberlain and I think that seems correct. However, the full answer to this riddle lies in what Supioduo and Mark said about the figure. Can you take their deductions a couple of steps further?
Regards,
Errol
By the way (and this is not connected to the answer to the riddle) a feature of this statue related to Julia's comment is that the plinth is decorated in the "egg and spinach pattern." See Gotheborg link.
I see this pattern occasionally on eBay auction items, but it does not seem very common.
Errol
Is he a foreigner, meaning not Chinese?
Craig
Craig:
The person is as Chinese as they come!
Errol
