Good afternoon, so sorry if this is a long post but I want to put out there what I was told. I purchased a couple of pieces from a family that just had their mother pass. They did not want any of her stuff so they had an estate sale. I was invited to come and look at some of the items to see If I was interested in anything and wasn't until I saw a large china closet in the bedroom with vases, plates and other porcelain items. They told me that no one that has been there previously, really were or have looked at any of "that" stuff and if I was interested, they told me I could have it all for x amount of dollars. I wasn't sure because I don't really deal in that field but, the price was right. Then they told me the story behind the items.
Their father, his name was Norton (Braxton) and served in the US Army in the European theater during WWII and then as the Economics & Labor Relations Officer of the Nagano Military Government Team in Japan to help with the reconstruction. He was known to the Imperial/Royal (?) family and when him and his wife (Elsie "Bette" he died a few years back and she just did in February) were married in Japan in July of 1947, the family presented them with five gifts. Two chargers, two vases and a porcelain little bowl. All were included and they didn't inform me until I was paying them. I asked if they had anything proving it but they had nothing. So, I'm trying to identify what these items are and would love some help. 🙂 I've identified some already but am not sure on the others.
I'll start with this piece. It is a charger that is approximately, 16" side to side and when sitting flat is approximately 2" high. The thing is a really dark blue cobalt and has designs that I haven't a clue about. Flowers and pearls? The outside of the charger has stylized dragons with pearls (?) between them. The under side is NOT marked anywhere. There is a small chip on the rim, on the back. I can't tell if it is painted or a transfer. The bottom rim is round, not flat. I have only seen one almost like it on the internet in my researching but it was in China and they had no information on it, just a picture with a link that didn't work. So, I'm thinking, maybe Imari? Any help is appreciated and if more photos are needed, I'll post them. I think the other charger is Imari as well.

@out-of-the-closet-antiques Very striking! The spur marks on the bottom indicate it has age, at least early 19th century, if memory serves. It's hand-decorated.
I am not familiar with this pattern.
I thought those were eclipses and looked up eclipses in Japanese lore and the meaning kind of fit in with marriage but the more I look at the charger, I can't help but see flower petals around those orbs. Ugh!

Now that I am looking at the back again, I realize this is probably Seto ware. These are usually very large. This one eighteen inches.

Based on the comments here, it looks like it's late 19th c. and probably worth around $500-1000 is my guess. (Caveat: I don't know Japanese antiques very well.)
Have to disagree a bit, Steve. If you put it up for auction on Ebay, you might only expect $50-100. In a retail store, they might get $150-$200. Its a nice dish, but the decoration is not rare. The cost of shipping these big chargers holds the realized prices down considerably.
