Hi, this is an estate inheritance. alleged acquisition from artist by the deceased. not sure of its provenance except through hearsay. seeking authenticity verification.

You probably have been told this painting is a work by artist Fan Zeng. You can see his works and biography by googling and it seems he is quite famous. Many of his works can be seen in online search. I’m not going to be able to authenticate this work as it is going to have to be done by a specialist, although I can see a Fan Zeng signature in the script.

As with George this is a so-called works by a very well-known and often copied artist.
Whilst I am not a collector nor a appraiser of this artists works there are a couple of concerns here.
Firstly the level of degree of fine detail/expression is missing. This is possible due to either hasty work or the competency of the attribute artist.
Secondly the style and angle of the calligraphy diifers on your example from known originals.
I have posted below a couple of known examples sold by bonhams and christies for your comparison.
This is just my opinion. You would need to obtain confirmation/other from one of the three majors or a recognized art dealer/gallery.

Thanks for your swift reply. Out of curiosity, how do you ascertain the degree of fine detail missing? My instinct is that it could be a high quality fake even though my team and I did a similar comparison with his drawings.
In any case, how do we go about having the painting apprised so that we can detail something for the estate's descendants.

Firstly when comparing works by this artist it's important to compare with know true examples and not attributes etc being tauted by lesser known auction houses who would not know or aren't prepared to do the leg work. They simply describe it as it is and let the market decide! When I first searched I was inundated with a huge amount of his works. Sadly a larger number are not by his hand.
Unfortunately this is not just his works that suffer from this situation. It's widespread with any known artist. Alive or dead.
Whilst the level of work is OK in your example. When it is compared with genuine ones the quality of the later stands out. That's not to suggest that there are not some excellent attributes out there. I am sure there are. But they can't copy the hand of the artists calligraphy to perfection. There will be anomalies that may not be visually seen with the initial work.
The only way to do this properly is to search the sold database of Christies, Sothebys and Bonhams. Only look at those with bold heading bearing his name. This indicates that the works being offered are genuine and not other. They may also appear in bold in the description. And yes the majors do offer from time to time works that are not by the artist but are high quality netherless. They are often described as attributes or possibly by.
I can not confirm with you but I would think that this artist would have a authorized agent selling his works. Artists often do with certain galleries. I would try and research this and make contact. They would be very aware of his current and past works.
So I would contact all three auction house and see what happens.
