Hi,
does anyone here know about Thai ceramics? My auction house offers this frog kendi. They say "late 17th century or later". All I have is this one picture, and I don't have the time to go there in person and look at it. However the surface looks similar to a 16th century covered box in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Is there a chance that the frog is at least a bit antique and not a modern copy?
Birgit
I get a turtle vibe from it 🙂 These look interesting and I hope someone knows about them.
It Mentions Kendi in this article. ( P36) but the only real interest is in the pictures of the fragments of their finds.

Thanks a lot dear SD! The ebook looks really interesting, I have saved it for when I have more time to read. I quite like Thai ceramics though I only have a ca. 1550 jar that I bought from one of the divers who worked on the Singtai shipwreck.
Yes the face is turtle-like, but the legs resemble those of a more recent Ebay frog.
Birgit
You might have to try find one of those ebooks in the library.

Hi Birgit,
Can't help with dating or authenticity but that creature on the top could be a Kappa . A mythical creature through out S.E.Asia and even parts of Russia that combines Frog, Turtle and some human features .
Michael.

Thanks a lot to both of you! The kappa kendi is in the leftovers of the auction, so I think I will secure it quickly and do the research afterwards.

Grab that jar too if it's cheap. If the Kappa is good then so is the jar. Also it looks just right for the museum piece and i doubt they fake SE asia stuff or at least if one is genuine so is the other.
Perhaps I misunderstood your first post, was the 16th century 'box' or jar you posted the picture of, in fact not in the auction but just for reference. To compare with the Frog.
Best of luck with this.
Yes, the jar in the first post is an authentic museum piece from the 16th century, I just put it there for comparison with the kendi. I have just paid for the kendi and will post additional pictures when I get it.

Thanks Michael. I knew there was a slice of Turtle in there.
Hi,
after I had bought the kendi I looked for similar ones online and in books. Ebay had two similar ones but less ornamented and they weren't sure about the age either. So I decided to ask an ID from Peter and he said it's a Sukothai or Sawankhalok kendi from the 15th century. Isn't that great news? To think it was a leftover item from a local auction. Here are some additional pictures of the kendi:
Birgit
That is great news! Really pleased for you!
Those photos are very good. Such great detail.
Hi Birgit -
What good news - my congratulations ...
I would echo Julia's comments re images - great clarity with fine, close up details ....
Stuart
Thank you Julia and Stuart. I used a macro lens for some pictures. But I’m never satisfied with my pictures. For the correct white balance I work with a spider cube and use RAW format, but due to that my pictures look always somehow faint, not really crisp as they should.
Birgit
