Hi,
I have a Guanxu mark Dragon plate that is possibly period but the reign mark on the reverse side is in a sideways direction compared to the Dragon on the front.
The glaze has orange peel and colours, overall feel, and footrim, lead me to believe that it is not a modern copy and could be from the Guanxu period 1875 to 1908. However, I am not an expert on Guanxu porcelain. What do you guys think?
I have also seen a couple of examples of Guanxu dragon plates from reputable dealers that have sold Guanxu Dragon plates with similar reign mark direction flaws... Does anyone else have information about reign mark direction flaws on the flip side of plates? One of my customers is claiming that the plate is fake because of this flaw.
This particular style of a front facing fierce dragon was not really seen during the Guangxu period.
The yellow is not correct.
The lack of shading (colour) indicates it's not imperial quality but made for export.
In my opinion it's not a modern copy but highly probable to be from the Republic period 1912-49.

It's not very light or very heavy.... I'm very familiar with Ming and Kangxi plates and this one is similar, maybe a little heavier than fine kangxi plates but, it is not heavy like a lot of the modern fakes. Not sure what you mean by wavy foot paste... the footrim is round. I'm not sure on what a famille rose Guanxu footrim should look like... the colour is a little brown but I was thinking it could be a little browned from the kiln as with multiple colours it probably had multiple firings??
Wavvy porcelain backs are often seen on early 20th Century porcelain as well as much later.
I still believe it's republic period rather than Guangxu period.
The mark direction fault l have seen before.
It's difficult because towards the end of the imperial reign the quality deterioration was evident.

What a coincidence; I was on your site last night!
Regarding the plate, I agree that isn't a Guangxu dragon, in fact I think it may be later 20th c. I get the idea that tourist items, copies, fakes often have an orange peel effect because buyers associate it with age.
Aside from that, I like marks to be the right way up. Statistically, I am sure there could be times when a mistake is made, but unless everything else is age-appropriate, I would always be wondering. Besides, to me this mark also looks oddly drawn in places.

I have read that alignment of the mark with the front pattern is a sign of very good quality. On lesser pieces the mark may not be aligned.
