Hello! I came across this Qialong Tureen and I have been looking for one! Does this look right for 18th century?
I think it might have been made a bit later - late Jiaqing or Daoguang. Are those handles in the form of deer heads? Could you post a clearer photo of them please?

dragonfly34: Alan and Giovanni are two of the very best contributors to this forum - I have absolutely no doubt their estimate is spot on.
If you're interested, my thoughts were that the shape of the tureen and shade of blue looked right for Qianlong, and of course the painting is lovely (I like the coy deer, curving like a fern frond), but that the foot (its cut and colour) looked later.
Like you, I'm here to learn. I think trying to assess things is a good way to do that: if wiser heads correct my misapprehensions, I can feel out my ignorance more quickly. Dragonfly34, Alan, and Giovanni, thanks very much for your patience!
Thank you! Yes, I am also still learning. My dream book would be one that shows side by side the foots and rims from different periods for each kind of piece and then also shows the fake/modern/warning signs of other ones. If anyone has seen that, let me know!! I find it hard to remember nuances without direct comparison!

I think the first thing to look for always, is the decoration - this tureen just feels right for C18th export in terms of the style, subject , spacing of the elements, and colour and tones of blue. And I agree it is a very good one
Qianlong glazes and the colour of the white glazed porcelain are often quite distinctive and different from later export and certainly from modern fakes. .
There are lots and lots of qianlong export items to compare with , so these are easier to judge than many other types of Chinese porcelain. Later C19th blue and white export shows a decline in quality of the material and painting , with repetitive patterns - the worst being something like this
In terms of the foot, although usually an C18th foot is often a lighter buff colour than on the tureen here, the colour and the way the foot is cut carefully , and is very clean , as for the unglazed rim on the lid etc, all is consistent with C18th. C18th porcelain is usually very dense and pure, but thicker bodied items may burn brown or iron reddish when fired.
