Hi, I am new here. Please help identify the item: Qing, Republic, or modern? The inside is very dirty, but looks like man-made.

A nice vase, which I think is 20th century, possibly second quarter. It's harking back to an earlier style in its choice of decorative motifs and the leaf mark on its base, though not in its choice of shape.

Thank you, Alan. I also felt kind of new through checking bubbles, though the seller claimed late QING.
I would also think this is late C20th, and suggest you consider the painting quality - are the leaves well-executed? properly outlined and filled in? are the birds realistic and vivid? are the blue tones vibrant and nicely shaded?

Thanks, Tam. It is indeed hand-painted, but the quality is so so. The vase is heavy.
Any other comments? I have no experience in justifying painting quality.
I think if you bought it as a decorative item and are happy with it , then that's fine. It is heavily potted and naively decorated but that could be part of its charm. As you say it's a hand made item.
A real qing dynasty vase should be more skilfully painted , with outlining then careful filling in of flowers, leaves etc. with blue cobalt, with no smudging or blurring across the lines. Shades of blue varied over the centuries but they should be bright and distinct rather than dull or washed out.
This also does not seem like a typical shape for any qing period vase, as someone else mentioned, and the leaf mark found on the base is a kangxi period device , whereas the decoration of birds and flowers looks like later C18th or into the C19th in style.

Don't know why I could not open a new topic. Tried four times and all failed. Anybody can help and see if the Qianlong Mark on the cloisonné true. Thanks. -Jim
I like these kind of unusual objects. Judging from the feet, and the decorative panels on the side , and the whole object, I would think this is more likely to be late C19th or early C20th.
These kind of artificial flower arrangements seemed very popular then , I seem to remember seeing photos of the Empress Dowager CiXi with large displays and objects with artificial plants etc.
Are the flowers and leaves made from stone , or some other material ?

thanks, tam. yes, the flowers and leaves are all made of jades, agate, coral, rock crystal. i have several pieces of late 19th and early 20th cloisonné. it seems this one can be a little old. just not sure if it could be Qianlong, mid 18th c.
I's a nice thing, but maybe it doesn't have the quality of an C18th piece? You would expect to see gilding on the wire enclosures , and the side panel on yours (two men in a boat?) is naively done, and is unusual for earlier pieces ......I mean the mixing of the stylised patterns of flowers, with a representational panel. Also the raised feet seem typical of later work. Hope someone else can help you with this .

I would go along with what Tam has said. The side panel reminds me of Clarice Cliff art deco style. It seems quite unusual, rather avant garde and I suppose that would be in keeping with the zeitgeist of the time Tam suggests.
Of course, I could be reading way too much into it, and I know so little! However, as art is so entwined with the time it was produced, it is maybe worth considering?
Either way, I think it is lovely, such a nice piece.

Thank you both, Tam and Julia. I saw raised feet and similar flower patterns in 18th c work. The point I was in doubt was also the two men in a boat as Tam pointed out. -Jim
Also I doubt the mark. The last character was not common in official Qing dynasty marks.
