Please may I ask if anybody has come across a similar piece to my leaping fish with gilded interior bowl and if so, I was wondering if it is possible to suggest a period in which it may have been made. The underglaze marks do not seem to be similar to any reign marks that I can see online.

I wish I was able to say more about it, it seems to have some age (Kangxi?). Maybe someone else knows more.

Your identification of the style has been very helpful. I have looked at the bowls on the online collections of both the British Museum and the V&A, and see what you mean about the gilding being on the outside. I guess that my bowl is a bit of an oddity, but I quite like the way that the gilding frames the leaping fish scene.

I have been searching online for another piece which is blue and white on the outside and red glaze on the inside and have only come across one other bowl, shown below. The other bowl is nothing like mine in style, but at least I now know that this combination was also made.
If anybody is aware of examples of this combination please can they let me know, as it would help me with my investigation into the origin of my bowl.

I have been informed that the writing is Chinese, but I have yet to get a translation which may provide me with a better idea as to if it is Chinese or Japanese.
I know that the leaping fish out of water is an auspicious Chinese symbol, but it may also be Japanese as well.

One of the scenes painted on the outside is a landscape and from my experience of Chinese watercolour paintings the scene feels like it is Chinese.

Having now received a translation of the characters on the bottom of my bowl it would seem that it is a Japanese bowl, as they read 'made by Seikozan Juroku'.

Hi Jeremy,
Thank you for coming back with that. I am not good with signs at all, but my thoughts were aiming at Japan due to the decorations (I have seen it quite commonly those floral swirls on Japanese pieces) and most of all the shape - typical for Japanese bowls and quite different from Chinese ones. I wonder how old it it, late Meiji, early 20th C?

I have now found out the original translation was incorrect and the maker of my bowl was actually Seikozan Kichiroku of Kioto and would have been made between 1800 and 1882. The reason for the large date range is that Yeiraku Riozen of Kioto was credited with starting the Japanese Kinrande style in 1800 and the marks of Seikozan Kichiroku are shown in the book published in 1882 by James Lord Bowes.
