Hi All,

I was researching this one for a while, dead-end for me - no similarities, no any other some sort info on this flask. I would be, very much grateful for personal opinions on the possible age and history of this flask. References to similarities - my hat is down!

Weight: close to 4kg; Height: 26cm; Widht: 26cm; Depth: 11cm.

Large and extremely heavy for its size.

A few pictures for your consideration are attached (a few pictures of inside as well);

P.S. what do you think? I love this "thing". Pictures scattered around for some reason...

Thank you!

@Audrius

I shall be interested to hear what others have to say about this.

I have seen a few pieces over the last couple of years that share similarities in weight, crackle and that rather distinctive but odd, orange dust-like coating in places. Some are pale/blue-tinged like yours, some more green, but all have pooling and glaze drips that seem deliberate.

My feeling is they were all modern, so I would suspect this may be one of those rather than a genuine example of what it is they are copying.

I did pick up a Guanyin, couldn’t resist the price and no one else wanted her. I have just had the rest of my stuff shipped out but not unpacked yet. If I can, I will take photos. I know she isn't old, she has a chip that shows her age. 😊

Hi Audrius -

The shape and moulded or relief decoration type is based on known Yuan period wares ...

Attached images for comparison:-

Image 1:- Celadon flask with edged shoulders, narrow neck and turned-over mouthrim, decorated in relief with a dragon and flaming pearl, Yuan dynasty, Sir Percival David Coll, British Museum ...

Such Yuan flask are also known in underglazed red with incised dragon/pearl/cloud decoration,  Image 2:- Gugong, Palace Museum, Beijing, and also in underglazed blue Image 3:- private collection ...

Similar moulded/relief decoration with dragon/pearl/cloud are also known on differing Yuan forms:- Image 4:- Celadon vase, possible the piece excavated at the Odawara Castle site and now in the Museum Yamato Bunkakan, Nara, Japan and again on Image 5:- Celadon incense burner, with carved and relief designs, Kenchoji Temple, Kamakura, Japan ...

Note the great differences in the movement show within these Yuan examples and those on your piece, which are rather ‘stiff/placed’ in comparison ...

Hi Audrius -

I understand these vessels types were used for decanting wine ...

There is a reference to this in the description of one of the two similar underglaze blue examples in the Aedebil Shrine Collection ...

I will trace and post tomorrow ...

Hi Audrius -

Attached image and description, by Jessica Harrison-Hall, from catalogue entry for a blue/white flask, ex Ardebil Shine Coll and know housed in the National Museum of Iran, taken from ‘Shah Abbas - The Remaking of Iran’ exhibition, British Museum, 2009 ...

Such flask are also known to have been produced at the Cizhou kilns, Hebei or Henan province, images 2/3 both of which are attributed to Yuan dynasty, these however are very rare ...

Just where/when and on what this vessel form are based upon is still been debated, possible originating from one of the Northern tribes or, more likely, a Near/Middle Eastern influence ...
