I am thinking Korean over Japanese, although am not at all sure. After looking at quite a few pictures I am leaning that way. Does not quite seem to match Shino, Seto or Karatsu. The mark, I am not hopeful in identifying, although maybe the origin can be deduced from it? Thanks, Todd

As a potter I would suggest that this is a contemporary piece, and probably from the United States. It is important to remember that many potters use Japanese , Korean , and Chinese forms as models of good form. I think your piece well potted and with good form, but I suspect modern.

I’m not sure about the age, it could be modern, as you say. I’m not at all familiar with American pottery. This vase was in a Japanese collection, which might change your opinion as to the origin? The Japanese don’t typically purchase American-made pottery in Japanese or Korean style and bring them back to Japan, in my experience. Although anything is possible. The mark also appears Asian...

I had saved this post intending to come back before the week got a little busier than expected; sorry for the delay.
Firstly, it's a lovely piece: and I feel a great find you took back with you!
I suppose it could be Shino (or part of the Mino family arch in general), the ash-type glaze with iron-oxide based brushings I feel would have very few fault you for classifying it as such; especially paired with the suana/pin-type holes.
But the above also could technically be said for any number of other sub-types across the ware spectrum I feel; and there's a lot of opinions out there, and each one is bound to have some form of credible backing if you search hard enough.
Too often though I feel we get caught up in classifications; and while it could help "narrow down" the choices, sometimes I think (at least speaking for me) it also complicates things due to so much overlap in styles/sub-styles/family types that can be found.
One thing I think you're 100% correct on is the origin, being Japanese definitively.
I think our friend above is correct in saying many Asian art forms do have American counterparts; but the signature (and additional information you included about its origin coming from a Japanese collection) along with firing tendencies and surface evidence reflective of that process has me personally think this is not only a Japanese piece; but very quite likely pre-War as well.
Can't currently be of much help with the base inscription; but hoping the above helped nonetheless.

While I too have a background in applied ceramic production, I tend to not let that be my basis of issuing opinions on other forms.
(I also love painting and have a passable knowledge in impressionist works, but I can't honestly for the life of me tell you the reason Renoir might've preferred the approach to realism of Courbet just ever so slightly over that of Manet, or visa-versa).
