When I was on holiday I found this plate in an antique shop. It was the only Chinese item in the whole shop and I got it for a decent price. It's nothing special, the design is quite common (though I don't know how if it has a name) but I like these simple kitchen Qing pieces.
There are many similar ones on Ebay and elsewhere, with an age given from Ming to Republic, as usual. It's 19th century but I wonder if the time when it was made can be nailed down more exactly. It's rather heavy, there's some kiln grit and a shop mark. The shop mark reminds me of the turquoise Canton plates with flowers and birds that are usually from Daoguang. Kiln grit and dirty glaze could be Tongzhi. The decoration around the rim is as blurred as it looks, it seems to have slid down while burning. I found a very similar example on Ebay and they said Jiaqing but maybe they were only guessing.
Birgit
Nice plate Birgit.
I think mid 19th century. So tongzhi period.
Mark
I think that Tongzhi is perfectly reasonable in this case. The art work is good but the technical aspects of production are what i associate with this period which in some respects is considered the nadir of Chinese porcelain where the quality of glazing and clay were in a marked state of degeneracy especially compared with the 18th C. Also the glaze has that typical blue green hue which i associate - wrongly or rightly - with mid 19th C. chinese porcelains. It also does not have republic era feel - at least to me.
i always give my disclaimer that I am not an expert but that is how i would have assessed it if i stumbled across it.
Thank you both!
Birgit
Hi Birgit,
Very nice! Thanks for starting this topic.
I have a little collection of saucers, a couple of bread plates and a few bowls in that pattern (Peter calls them "pencil" or "skeletal" deocration items). One bowl I had appraised turned out to be 1890s.
I always thought they were all 19th to early 20th century but then one bowl I had Peter appraise - see photos - he said could be as old as Qianlong all the way to early Daoguang, which surprised me. He had to see the foot rim first, though. Not sure what the telling signs are although it seems the late 18gh c. examples have neat foot rims with slight orange, the middle 19th are messier and gritter, and the 1890s examples are neat again but white, no orange.
Warm regards,
Steve
Hi Steve, your bowl is beautiful and looks older than my plate. More carefully painted and the foot rim in accordance with the time Peter gave. Even the shop mark looks less messy. Thank you for showing it. I didn’t know the pattern was that old. As with all patterns it deteriorated during the decades.
Birgit
Yes, it was popular, wasn't it? Peter said that there are examples from the early 18th c., too.
