Hey Folks,

So excited I couldn't wait to receive it to post.  Last night I was falling asleep and this popped up on my feed under vintage Japanese porcelain.  I bought it after looking at two pictures, it was cheap and the quality looked outstanding.  After paying I looked back though and screen shot it and texted John Guerrero, who immediately suggested Kinkozan.  The impressed mark I cannot see, but the red mark is Kinkozan.

So what do you all think?  And what is the age?  I think Meiji, but I am not familiar enough with satsuma to know his marks that well.

I will definitely be posting better pics when I get it.

Cheers,

Jeremy

Hi Jeremy,

Beautiful vase you have purchased. In excellent condition from the images.

@rahawkins

That was my initial thought before I even knew it was Kinkozan, just an extra colorful, and very detailed beauty.  Being half asleep when I bought it, I am thrilled with the responses on here.

@imperialfinegems

Thanks Mark,

It certainly looks to be in great condition, though I think I can see a bit of gilding loss or enamel loss on a few spots on the panels.

Very excited for it to arrive on Saturday.

I get so confused with the dating on these, since some sources say impressed marks are earlier, and some that the red scrawled Kinkozan marks are later.  Glad to hear Meiji is the range.

Jeremy

@lotusblack

Thanks Brian,

Never had a Kinkozan piece yet, but I have looked around a bit online and found many comps like it.

Have you posted yours on here before?

Cheers,

Jeremy

@jbeer2121,

Hi Jeremy,

Your vase is definitely Late Meiji period 1868-1912. So circa 1900. The quality is consistent with other works by said kiln.

Later pieces from the Taisho and very early Showa periods were in my opinion for the most part substantially substandard in quality. Mass produced.

The red mark was used during the Meiji period. The indented mark was also used late in the late Meiji period. Yours is a little bit unusual as it has both.

The gilt loss at the top is normal. The rest looks in great condition.

For your information here is my kinkozan vase. Its dated between 1885-1900. It's marked in red 'kinkozan, I made'. Its a exceptionally rare example as it is done in monochrome sang-de-boeof'.

@lotusblack,

Very nice example.

Mark

Hi Mark,

I have a very similar one to the red one you posted, mine is blue and is a garlic head. It has the dragon that is off the body of the vase. What is the term for this if there is any?
I'll post up a pic if it would help.

@jbeer2121, Sorry, not trying to hijack the post, just never saw another like mine. Your little Japanese vase painting is stunning.

Hi Jeremy that vase is beautiful. the painting is very consistent with a small Kinkozan vase I own that has a red mark as well and which I believe to be Meiji Period. I wonder if our vases were done by the same artist. Whats the size of yours?

Hey Folks,

Thought I would update with pics since it has arrived.  One enamel chip to one of the ladies on one side and some minimal gilt rubbing, but overall super nice original condition.

I am blow away with how tiny the work is, so much meticulous detail crammed into such a small space.

Cheers,

Jeremy

Robin,

That's a beautiful little bud vase, I love the little flower sprigs used in the ground.

Mine is just about 6" tall.

Jeremy

@imperialfinegems

Mark,

I have never seen a red ground vase like yours, especially not satsuma, very attractive.  I recently saw one that had a light blue ground, and gilt dragons, but I forgot to even bid.... oops.
