Dear all,
I won this pot at an ebay auction by a well known dutch seller. It was advertised as being Japanese and 17th to 18th century. I found it interesting and acquired it for a rather low price.
Now that I hold it in my hands I wonder about a few things. At first I am not sure that it is indeed Japanese as I could not find a comparable Japanese piece online. The only comparable pot I found is this 19th century Chinese one from the met.

Moreover the colour and thickness of the glaze and the dense white paste remind me of a Kangxi plate I once owned. I assume that the script are four different poems but am unfortunately not able to read it.
What do you think regarding the age and origin of this pot? And is anyone able to read the script or has a tip on how to translate it?

Hi,
I assume that is an optical illusion and there isn't really a silver/metal strip on one side?
I think it is Japanese, certainly the writing looks Japanese but I can't be 100% sure and I certainly can't read it. I also have no idea if the date they have given is correct, this isn't something I am familiar with.

@asiarob this is Japanese and the period suggested the cobalt in early Arita is much lighter than later periods. I like these porcelain wares. One other thing these guys are extremely credible and have expert knowledge if they say it’s Japanese and period they are most likely correct.

You bought yourself a very nice brushpot.
It's Japanese in the styling of Chinese. But Japanese nether the less. The way the base is portrayed is the give away.
I was looking at this when it was on auction.
The price you paid is imo very cheap.
I think a lot of potential buyers were put off by the crack on the base. Its not s crack. It's a firing flaw. Perfectly normal etc.
The guys in Amsterdam are very reliable and trustworthy. They have both huge inventory of resources as in books etc.
I could see this selling in a boutique for at least $400.
BTW is the tomobako (box) marked?

indeed it is a nice old piece for a reasonable price. The tomobako is unmarked. It is far too new to be the original one anyway, but still nice to store the piece in.
If you wanted to translate the calligraphy, how would you do so? It would be really nice to know the contents. Maybe that would enable more exact dating as well.

I have an update on the pot.
I got two of the scripts translated. They are both Chinese script, not Japanese.
One is 出水菱荷翠，香飘沼内来. and means something like "My grandma used to pick water chestnuts in summer and cook them, it's very delicious."
the second one is a couplet from the poem Youyuan Buzhi (Visiting a Private Garden without Success) of the Chinese Tang Dynasty poet Ye Shaoweng 春色滿園關不住 - 支紅杏出牆來 and is translated to "but spring can't be kept locked in a garden一 a branch of red blossoms reached past the wall"
Im am a bit excited now as I found out that the depicted flowers are in different states closed buds, opening flowers, flowers in full bloom and faded flowers. Moreover they really look like water chestnut plants and flowers.
My brushpot may depict the four seasons with one poem for each season.
I still find it interesting that there are Chinese poems on a Arita cup. Does anyone know if is was common to decorate Japanese porcelain with Chinese poems?
Now I need to translate the two last poems to confirm my theory..

Is it possible that it was made in the mid 17th c when the Chinese exports were in decline and Japanese production filled the void? Or could it have been ordered as a gift?
