I purchased this in 1975 at a Missouri shop. I thought it was Japanese. There was a firing flaw (a little bit of clay), but I loved the iron oxide and ribs on the shell design. Is this considered Imari because of the iron oxide? I had signed my first teaching contract for a whopping 13k a year (big teacher bucks for a beginning teacher in 1975), so I had a little more money to play with for my shop wanderings. I had a 4 year break between my Sophomore and Junior year as a Navy wife. I managed to finish my last two years in a year and a half so I could support my husband while he completed his extensive education. I worked a number of jobs during those various moves with the Navy, including as a receiving clerk at a warehouse for a major department store, dealing with bills of lading and such. I developed my life time aversion to paying retail (the mark up is incredible). I ended up as a department manager for another store and while I had always wanted to be a buyer, I had not wanted to be buying hardware. Once when I came back to the phone after looking something up in my books, I was party to a contractor telling his cohorts, "they have a GIRL in charge over there." That's right pal.

This looks to be Japanese and C20th to me, the effect on the rim is either applied gilding or a dark brown wash , which is sometimes used to protect the rim from chips and damage, but also as a decorative effect.
Iron oxide lines or effects are an inadvertent product of the firing process , and it's usually seen on older pieces, because of the iron content of porcelain clay. But now fakers can copy this effect, so it's not a sign of age necessarily

Yes it has a gilded edge, but the gilding has worn away in places, there is no brown on the surface. I thought a soldier probably brought it home from the Pacific or possibly a tourist because there was no country of origin, of course it may have had a paper label at some point but nothing in 1975. I thought circa 1945 through 1965, because some of the gilding had worn, but maybe they just liked it as a dish for mints. I should have said iron oxide red color on the part that represents the hinge of the shell design. As always, thank you Tam for sharing your knowledge, I too think it is mid twentieth century and Japanese.
Look Tam, I found an example of the brown around the front edge that you wrote about on a modern piece. It has an impressed mark that appears to be some interconnected circles within a square, it may represent a flower of some sort. The figure may be doing his Yoga. Thank you very much for all you do to educate us.
