Today I bought this blue and white Vase at a house clearing.
After buying mostly modern stuff I hope that now I finally got one piece that has some age and value to it.
The paste is very white and a bit translucent. I´ve done some online research but am not able to find out what´s the age and origin of the Vase. The chrysanthemums and pines look japanese to me, but I was not able to find any comparable designs.
Can anyone help me determining the age and origin of this vase?

Hi Robin,
It's a delightful looking vase you have purchased.
In my opinion it's Japanese and probably from Taisho to early Showa period. So around the 1930's.
I am however not 100% sure either way. I hope others can chim in with their thoughts.

Very nicely decorated vase I like that plump little bird. It is a very hard one to be certain about place of origin or date. However think Marks comments are on the right track.

Not really my area but concur with others post - a very nice example, well painted and an aesthetic pleasing shape ...
The slight mouthrim damage is easier repaired and it appears to need a light clean ...
I will defer to others regarding attributed dating ...

Can anyone tell me, how they identify the Time 1900 - 1930? Just a feeling based on other examples seen, or some "hard" facts like paste and decor?
And does someone know what could be the value of a piece like that?

Hi Robin,
More or less from experience with the different Japanese porcelain/other from the Meiji period (1868-1912) through to the Taisho period (1912-1926) and the early Showa period (1926-1989). It's a ongoing learning experience.
Each period introduced various and slight changes in style/creativity which were influenced both from internal and external influences.
Similar situation with Chinese porcelain/other. It's how we determine when or where a piece was likely produced. Among and including other equally important observations.
Ultimately its up to interpretation with your vase. It's highly subjective. Some may think your bottle is late Meiji period. Other like myself think late Taisho early Showa. They could be right. I could be wrong. It wouldn't be the first time.

thanks for the explanation. Does anyone have a rough idea regarding the value of pieces like this? I´d like to get the mouth rim restored but don´t want to spend too much compared to the value of the vase.

Valuing Japanese porcelain is very subjective etc.
If this vase was without any damage I feel it would be worth about $400usd in a retail environment.
Given the extensive damage I believe it is worth in the same retail setting about $150 usd in its current condition.
The above is retail and not auction or other.
Here a couple of similar vases to yours.
The first one is about the same size but is described as early 19th century. It's currently on the market for about $350usd. It has damage (chip or two) on the lip.
The other is much smaller than yours and on the market for $215usd. Described as Meiji period.
Personally I would not entertain the idea of any repairs. It's fairly extensive from what I can see. It's not worth professionally to have said work performed in my opinion.
If it was by a known maker of repute then I would be swayed to the idea of repair.

thank you so much! That is much more info than I expected. I am happy to have found this beautiful Vase for the 5$ I paid and will enjoy it in my collection. If I get it restored one day, I´ll show it on the forum again.
