And you are certain about that? What a shame.
What about this one from the same seller? Looks authentic to me.
Hi Corey,
Why do you think this is authentic?
Had a quick look at this sellers other items.
I was not impressed by the so-called imperial quality jade and gem studded snuff bottle!
Mark
It's just the look of it. And the condition perhaps. It also has 16 watchers. But I'm not certain at all. Would you be interested if it's a real one?
The seller doesn't say it is authentic and the watchers may only be watching to see if the item actually sells for that price. I don't know much about these items at all, but is it these that are meant to have a musty/damp earth type odour?
If so, you could ask.
Julia
Hi Corey,
No I have no interest ATM.
Only asked the question out if curiosity.
His description including the wording style is problematic in itself. If I was going to buy/bid I would seek further opinions.
Have no idea on whether this item is priced to sell or out of the ball park!
Mark
Dear Corey,
If I may revert to discussion of the vase that initially prompted your post, I would be very concerned about the seller's claim that it is nineteenth century. It appears to me to be modern, and in that I agree with Xin's previous comment.
I have seen a number of these sorts of ware appearing in the last year or two. One with a Qianlong mark which was being offered by Sotheby's Paris was subsequently removed from the sale. I had wondered about it from the start. By sale day, I was interested to see that it had been pulled from auction.
Incidentally, for the seller to describe the vase as Ru Guan is in any case a bit of nonsense.
Best wishes,
Alan
A shame with the guan vase. It would be nice to have a Qing dynasty example as a study piece.
Regarding the sancai attendant. Yes, It's the one of the types of ceramics that usually has a musty smell when they have been out of the graves for a while. When freshly looted the stank is rotten. Terrible. But the fakes can have added smell too. The water absorbnance test is a better clue, I think. I might send the seller a message like Julia suggest, even though I'm not overwhelmingly interested myself. It would probably be a good buy though, given the large size and if it only have cracks and has not been broken apart and glued together. It's difficult to tell from the pictures. I came across this one from Doyle for comparison with the size. Note that it also have cracks and a possible repair, etc.
Did you notice that the seller says "Han Tang STYLE" so he's on the safe side? I just looked through many pages of Han and Tang figures in "Allen's Authentication of Ancient Chinese Ceramics" and the faces all look similar to the one from the Doyle auction (a bit like a garden gnome). The face of the Ebay figure doesn't look as it should in my opinion. I'm not an expert in ceramic figures, but I wouldn't buy this one.
Birgit
Here are a couple of examples of sancai attendants with faces that resemble the face of the one in focus. I don't see anything odd in the face of that one. The face of the one at Doyle reminds me more of the faces of sancai lokapalas.
I actually do find there is something wrong with the head. Now I have your other examples opened and am comparing: I think the first example does not have the same proportions. In the genuine examples the head is somewhat larger in proportion to the body and the face on the one you are considering is too remote and impassive.
As I said, I know so little about this but that is what strikes me when I consider them all.
Julia
I knew you would see it too, Julia. The head seems wrong. I ask myself if they glued the figure together from two different pieces.
Birgit
I looked at his other items and there were some very questionable descriptions and age claims.
