Hi all …

Attached images of a very large, 49.7cm, Longquan celadon dish recently acquired from Sotheby’s New York …

Obvious condition issues , broken in half, left hand cavetto/rim broken into three/four pieces and some small losses to body and mouthrim, but it is an extremely rare example of type …

The overall composition combines raised carved decoration of lotus and leaves to the centre and lotus scroll to cavetto, both against a combed ground, incised radiating strokes to the bracketed, lobed rim and lotus scroll to exterior …

A very similar dish, but with the central lotus blossom and leaf reversed, is in the Topkapi Saray Collection, Istanbul . The overall decoration and glaze tone exhibited on this piece is much higher quality …

Having made extensive enquiries, the Istanbul piece and Sotheby’s example would appear to be the only two, so far, known and published and there cannot be many others elsewhere so …

Catalogued as ‘Yuan - Early Ming, this dish can be attributed to late 14th/early 15th centuries, so Hongwu/early Yongle periods …

Restoration of celadon wares is particularly difficult, due to the high intensity of colour and glaze translucency, but my restorer has been successful before. It just takes a considerable amount of time …

Marked China on the bottom. One Scroll is 18th century Japanese and the other 19th century Thia. The woodblock prints are in excellent condition . The landscape print has some acid burn from the cardboard backing . The two small stem bowls are early 19th century Chinese for the Thai market. I think I did pretty good. You never know.

Hi all -

Attached images, catalogue description, provenance details and condition report of a bowl just acquired from Bonhams New York, late March, D. 23.5cm …

The overall design exterior design of four winged ‘sea houses’, shown without clouds, in between swirling, cresting waves against mountains below a moon, or possibly sun, is very rare. More so the celestial flames imitating from the mountain base, a most unusual depiction of this motif …

The interior design is rather more standard, the centre with a winged celestial horse and flames, shown amongst clouds and below a moon, above stars, including a three star constellation, and swirling, cresting waves. A lotus scroll to cavetto, the six full facing blossoms drawn on thin, curling stems and multiple small leaves …

The undercut footrim is quite high, thick and strongly potted. Lower third of body also thickly potted, which then progressively thins to the mouthrim. Cobalt tone quite strong, exterior letter overall whilst interior slightly paler overall.The glaze appears to have been either poured, or perhaps brush, on the base and inner footrim …

The ‘Ming dynasty’ catalogue dating is very wide, to say the least, but overall composition, painting style, individual motif detailing, cobalt application, shading and writing of the ‘Da Ming Nian Zhi’ means this bowl can be attributed to within a 15/20 year period …

When previously sold, Lot 349 Christie’s London, 10 December 1979, it sold for £380 …

On the first Sunday every month an antiques market takes place in the small town I recently moved to …

Whilst walking around earlier this morning I came across this rather lovely carpet which, due to the dimensions L. 340cm, W. 79cm, I understand is called a ‘runner’ …

The pattern is symmetrical, the whole thickly woven from wool in a range of quite beautiful colours, the major one being red but also included are blues, green, orange and either a beige or white …

The dealer said they had acquired it, along with two others they also had which were not as nice, from a large, old house of someone who recently passed away. They thought it may originate from either the Near/MiddleEast and was, probably, 20th century …

I know virtually nothing about carpets, so any help, thoughts and opinions would be greatly appreciated …

The auction house where I won the Liao dish had a rather strange aftersale. It was like a second auction, lasting one week. The beautiful collection of early ceramics stayed unsold apart from the Liao dish and this Five Dynasties bowl I won at the aftersale. If I could have afforded it I would have bought more. Probably these older ceramics are out of demand just now.

The Yue ware celadon bowl is 15 cm or 5 3/4 " wide and an underwater find with some traces of corals or whatever sticks to shipwreck pieces. There's a lovely parrot pattern incised at the bottom. As I have no good pictures yet I show the ones from the auction house. I took a picture with my phone to show the parrots.

Parrots, though not native to China, were a popular design on five Dynasties Yue ware. There's even a fake on Ebay, but as always they overdid the decoration.

Hi all -

I acquired this landscape painting from Wooly’ in November but have only just collected …

It bares the signature and two seals of Qian Du; traditional Ch’ien Tu; c. 1764-1844, a Chinese landscape painting during the Qing dynasty who’s style was influenced by Wang Meng. He also painted human figures and flowers …

The inscription reads;

‘Shan Zhuang Can XueNi Fan Zhongli Chen Gu Zhi QuDao Guang Renwu Er Yue Bing Hou Du Men Xie Ke, Chuang Xia Za Yi Song Yuan Min Zhu Jia Mo Miao, Wei Xia Bi Shi Shou Jiang Wan Ruo, Shu Zu Shen Ye’

Which may be translated as;

‘In the second month of the Renwu year of Daoguang, having just recovered from illness, I secluded myself at home receiving no visitors. Sitting by the window, my thoughts drifted to the exquisite brushwork of the Song, Yuan and Ming masters. Yet when I took up my brush, my wrist felt stiff and my hand unsteady, an irony that made me laugh’

‘Lin Mei (Qian Du) of Qiantang painted’; with inspiration and seal …

My apologies for any mistakes in the translation!!🙄

However, the painting was catalogued and attributed as ‘late Qing’. Having discussed at length with Wooly’s painting specialist, and several others, the general consensus is that it is a later copy, very late Qing/early Republic period …

Although only a copy, it is still quite nicely painted with good detailing and prospective …

It was acquired from Moon Gate Antiques, Singapore in the late 1940’s and passed down through the family …
