Many thanks for your reply and all of this great information! I appreciate your (and everyone’s) responses. I found this in a small junk store in Salisbury, UK and am delighted to learn that it is likely Ming era. It will remain in my small collection - I'm just so happy to confirm its apparent age. Thank you again to all - your replies and kindness are most appreciated!

Hello everyone,

I am hoping somebody may recognise or have encountered similar sculptures.

I recently acquired a collection of 14 large natural wood sculptures believed to originate from Indonesia. The sculptures were part of a long-held private UK collection (over 25 years) and are understood to have previously been exhibited together, although no documentation has survived.

Several characteristics make the collection unusual:

• Consistent steel display mounts throughout
• Handwritten reference numbers on the bases
• Recorded weights written on several pieces
• Similar presentation style across the collection
• No maker's marks, signatures or labels

I have contacted museum curators, Asian art specialists, horticultural archives and auction houses, but so far nobody has been able to identify comparable examples or provide further provenance.

I have also carried out extensive reverse image searches without finding anything remotely similar.

I would be very grateful for any thoughts regarding:

• Possible origin or collecting category
• Timber species
• Similar collections, exhibitions or dealers
• Whether these resemble any recognised form of Asian rootwood or natural sculpture

I have attached several photographs of the collection.

Many thanks for any help or suggestions.

Westley
United Kingdom

Hi Christa, and as with others welcome to this wonderful forum …

From the images, your bowl looks to be a Ming example and, possibly, dates to the early/mid 16th century …

Such pieces, decorated with a single central floral spray, undecorated well and detached exterior floral sprays, on this example a lingzhi motif, were very popular combinations used by the minyao or private kilns …

Such pieces were produced in large numbers, mainly for export to the Philippines, Indonesia, South East Asia and the Near/Middle East …
