I was glad to be of assistance re:the plaque. Given the inscription by the artist and the 1947 date I believe it to be better than simply a tourist item. If you like it, it may be worth framing for display. I recently purchased a bronze Guanyin on eBay that is new, but it is a nice work of art and displays beautifully. I like it!

New Muwen Tang book on Pith Paper Paintings

For those of you interested, Muwen Tang has a new book out (2025), at least new to me – this one on the Pith Paper Paintings of Canton. It is not inexpensive, at HK$880, but is beautifully done, as are all their books. They ship worldwide and rapidly, so it is probably worth going to the source if you plan on buying. Browse the rest of their books while you are on their website. You will be tempted to spend your entire art budget, I promise!

Sharon, yes, the Bukowski piece was the one I found previously. I thought of the possibility that this little brush washer was Japanese, but the Arita bases are different. They have the divot in the middle and broad circular base, but the broad circular base is flat instead of concave, at least in my experience. So I am fairly convinced this is Chinese.

@gfhandel Thank you for responding to me. I'm still curious if it is more likely, what I call a "tourist" item, or something more than that. From the look and feel of the piece, 1947 seems more appropriate, but definitely older than the year 2000. I'm thinking of framing it and displaying it.

The one with similar color and base was a censor from Spring 2010 Spring sale at Bukowski Stockholm. It comes up when you use Google Lens on your piece, Bukowski included photos of the base, which is a good learning device, would that they were all so diligent. Thank you, it was fun searching for that base on a Chinese piece.

P.S. I did find a similar base on a piece of clair de lune that they identified as late Qing example that was on Bukoski's at one time, base did look similar, except it had a blue mark in the center of the bull's eye base and had an incised design under the glaze. Also, I seem to recall that Birgit and Julia had told in an old post that the Chinese had also used a bull's eye base in the past.

Dear Alan:

I did not buy it; I am a newbie trying to learn from Peter's videos. I did "diagnose" this plate as modern and maybe a fake. Based on the forum responses, I guess I was right. Identifying fakes appears to be the most important skill when buying at auctions. Just my opinion, but some fakes can be attractive to the eye and if cheap, might have decorative value. Thank you for your input.
