New Muwen Tang book on Pith Paper Paintings

For those of you interested, Muwen Tang has a new book out (2025), at least new to me – this one on the Pith Paper Paintings of Canton. It is not inexpensive, at HK$880, but is beautifully done, as are all their books. They ship worldwide and rapidly, so it is probably worth going to the source if you plan on buying. Browse the rest of their books while you are on their website. You will be tempted to spend your entire art budget, I promise!

Clair-de-lune brush washer

Hi All,

Any thoughts on this clair-de-lune or pale blue celadon brush washer? It has a nice shape, and the bottom has what looks like authentic wear and staining. The foot rim is ridged and the base is unglazed and concave, with a deeper, glazed center.

Looking for comps, I found a similar one with a similar base, except it had a Kangxi mark in the center. It was attributed to late Qing. Any thoughts on this one? The foot looks great to me, but I think the large number of glaze bubbles in the inside glaze looks a bit suspicious...

Please help me identify this plaque

I would like to know if this is a "tourist" item or something more valuable to research. Dimensions are 7.75" X 5" what seems to be hand painted on ceramic. The edges are "ragged".

Please help identify Kangxi Vase monochrome green?

I have a 44cm, 17.3 inch High Apple-green monochrome glazed vase with fine-mesh crackle, featuring an incised six-character Kangxi mark on a glazed base, and a stepped foot ring that feels smooth and soft to the touch. Refined white clay body with visible wood-kiln pinpricks.

I am requisition opinion of this pair of vases sold to someone else on line

These vases, sold at auction to an unknown bidder(not me and I did not bid) caught my eye as attractive and I assumed if authentic they would be sold at a very high price. After the sale, I wondered if they were modern, since they sold for $150 and but were said to have been in a museum. All opinions are welcome as a learning exercise for me please...and thanks.

Yellow Meiping Vase

Dear All,

I would be grateful for some views on this yellow meiping vase.

It's 14 in. (35.5 cm) high and bears an apocryphal Zhengde mark on the base. There is incised decoration with the "three friends of winter" motif along with some cranes. The shoulders are rather rounded and it has a dish-shaped mouth with lappets on the neck.

It came from a country house in Dorset, England and was acquired by a former Christie's specialist who recognised it in an auction 30 years later (having previously handled it).

After some digging, I found a Hongzhi / Zhengde vase in the British Museum with similar features (viz. rounded shoulder and dish-shaped mouth with lappets), which the later potter might have been imitating. I attach the catalogue entry (Harrison-Hall 2001 Catalogue of Late Yuan and Ming Ceramics in the British Museum) for the earlier Ming vase.

Both the pale, mottled glaze and the shape struck me - and its previous owner - as being rather unusual.

My best guess was 18th to 20th century, but I would be grateful if anyone could narrow that down or point me to a similar type of piece, whether shape or glaze.

This is a question: Is it possible to distinguish Chinese Kangxi Imari from Chinese non Khangi 18th century Imari

On this forum, if I post 12 of my 18th century Chinese Imari front view only plates with diameter, is it reasonable to ask Forum members to determine which ones are Chinese Kangxi Imari and which ones are not ? Just asking !

Buddhist Lion Guan, Lot 112 Caza Sikes sale

And with the greatest respect to Peter, but a slight correction …

I have just watch this week’s Newsletter video in which Peter discusses the price obtained for this guan, Lot 112, at the third one owner ‘Shadow of the Dragon’ sale held recently at Caza Sikes …

The auction house included the catalogue entry when this piece was exhibited at the Columbus Museum of Art, 1982, which attributes this guan to ‘Ming, 16th Century’ …

The painting style on this piece bares absolutely no resemblance to anything produced in the 16th century by the Imperial or private kilns, either for the internal or export markets …

I contacted Caza Sikes, requesting a number of additional images, including the forth lion not included on the website description, the base, footrim and outer edge of such, any damage areas and close ups of specific motif details and cobalt shading, application and tone. I must compliment Caza Sikes, as they happily forward everything requested …

These confirmed the guan to be early 15th century, the overall painting style, motif combinations, detailing, cobalt, glaze and body characteristics all indicated it can be attributed to within a 10/15 year period. I will go into further details, for the obviously reasons …
