It’s a thin wood trunk/chest with five hand painted scenes and the inside is a layer of stain or lacquer. The paper is stitched on the trunk. I show the top, front and inside. Thanks for your thoughts.

Hi everyone,

I know this isn't actually Asian but I was wondering if anyone can tell if it's English or Dutch or ...? It's a 13" charger that's old, with signs of age, I'm guessing 18th century. It's unmarked, earthenware, with a firing flaw in the middle and fritting at the rim. I thought it would make an interesting companion to my blue and white Chinese porcelain that inspired it.

Thank you!
Steve

I’m hoping someone here may recognize this unusual small bronze or brass tripod vessel.

It measures approximately 2½ inches tall, about 3 inches from handle to handle, and weighs about 13 ounces. It is nonmagnetic and has a dark aged patina with areas of green oxidation. The exterior has three claw-style feet and two small side handles.

I initially believed it was a solid, one-piece vessel. While examining and gently cleaning it, I accidentally discovered that the body began to unscrew at an almost invisible horizontal seam.

The two halves screw together with unusually fine, precisely cut threads. When opened, the lower half contains a concealed erotic relief of a man and woman. The relief appears to be part of the original casting rather than something added later. I have covered the explicit portion in the photos.

It was originally sold to me as a Chinese incense burner, but I have not found evidence that it was actually intended to burn incense. I previously found one apparently identical example in a European auction listing described as an antique salt cellar, although I have not been able to relocate or verify that attribution.

It came from the estate of people who traveled extensively, including through Europe and Asia, but I do not know where or when they acquired it.

I would be grateful for any thoughts about its country of origin, approximate age, intended use, maker, or whether anyone has seen another example.

Please may I ask for your help in regards to this humble slip-painted bird.

97252
97251

It is on a bowl in my collection and I believe that it significantly predates the images which I have gathered online below.

97253

I believe that the group of images may be based on on a bowl similar to mine which may have been in an exhibition or a Museum collection and I am trying to find out if these much later bowls were made in China or Japan. Some of the bowls have been described as being Chinese Batavia-ware, whereas others Meiji period Japanese. I suspect that some may be 20th century, but it would be helpful to find out if they are Chinese or Japanese.

A couple of the bowls posted online have under-glaze blue characters.

Kind regards,
Jeremy
