Yes, I think you are right. Your observations are convincing as usual. If it were not stenciled, why would it be so misaligned? The back is hand-drawn, agree also. Just a cleaner job than most stencil examples.

Mine is only 5.5" diameter, but the 3 friends of winter in center and other decoration, including the outside hand painting, the nine inch would be more valuable and has the old stilt marks on back, but about the same age and I bought mine in the early eighties, I think the 9" would be worth closer to the 20-40 price range. The cobalt blue on these older stenciled pieces are truly lovely, price low because mass produced. Sharon

I still think this is at least partly stencilled - if it isn't it is quite poorly painted. For example, only one of the cartouches is aligned correctly, there is a strange line like one sees on prints, all the smudging, the odd-shaped flower infills etc. The back is hand-painted, but the front really does look like it is stencilled. I can see why you are having doubts, but given the messiness, I don't see how so many small, fairly thick lines could have been achieved without even more mess without a guide of sorts.That doesn't mean I am right, of course!

I did laugh at Todd's joke, however I do believe that estimate of $20-$40 and the starting price are reasonable. What I don't understand is the reference to Wanli. And given this is Japanese, I would remove the other references to China, too.😊

I have to apologize. I took a quick glance at the pictures and assumed it was stenciled and saw the opportunity to be funny 😄. It certainly is in the style of mass-produced stenciled plates that are readily available for peanuts. But upon closer examination, it is at least partially hand-drawn or maybe all done by hand. It is Japanese and Meiji, that seems certain. I don't see the obvious evidence of stenciling or transfer that are normally present. Basically, the style screams stenciling, but I am now doubtful. Maybe my friends Mark, Birgit and Julia can take another look and weigh in again.
