Yes Sharon, I believe that number 9 was used for some kind of identification as the vase came off the production line at the kiln.

P.S. George also told me that the Japanese number could represent the number that were produced in that style. AI thinks it is Satsuma and the ones most similar in style to the side handles and general style without any lids are identified as Satsuma by Google Lens, the marks vary, but the most similar in style, of course that depends on how knowledgeable the person making the listing was in identifying the item.

George told me that my teapot with that mark both on the bottom and the lid was for the number, but we would need to see a photo of the top looking down to interior, in order to see if it has an interior ledge for a lid to sit on top. George said it was a number to match the bottom and top together. For this piece I vote Satsuma.

Japanese Kutani Moriage pottery. 20th century. Chinese also make Moriage Satsuma in recent days. I believe this is dated around 1925. It’s worth about $150. Once again Kutani can look like Satsuma

I had a look around and found similar ones some are described as earthenware. However, the bases have different marks - I wonder if they are references to the styles which are all slightly different. If you do a Google image search you'll see what I mean and also be able to check the prices, which vary.

If it weren't for that mark, I would have said satsuma of some kind, it doesn't look like Kutani and to me, it looks like earthenware. Is the paste dense and makes a dull sound if you tap the rim (gently!)

Could that mark have some other reference like refer to a number in a set of vases? Although 9 seems a lot!

@watership lot's of different opinions! Auction house thought it was earthenware, I really know very little about pottery. I got it for $50 any way, so a good find!
