Hi Carol,

I own 2 lovely Hoi An plate/bowls with birds, that I won at Butterfield's in 2000. Just for those who don't know, Butterfields, which was for so long a San Francisco "institution" if you will, eventually became Bonhams, so maybe Bonhams can help you? My plate/bowls still have the stickers from the original auction, but I have never researched the numbers. Sorry I can't help you there. I also had a huge, beautiful bird charger from that auction, but I gave it to a friend who had done some wonderful things for me at a time of great need in dealing with horrific health challenges. I have moments, maybe just seconds, of regret about that, but I am always happy to share my objets d'art when a wonderful person has helped me out in some unique and special way, when they have no expectations of any recompense for their kindness.
All the best,

That is what I thought. I remember a post where someone said he was looking at an auction of one of the items; he said he and a friend looked at the catalogue and, since the number on the sticker didn't match, they presumed the item was a fake. I was wondering if there was any correlation at all between the lot and sticker numbers. There is none that I can see so far.

Thank you for reminding me about The Dragon Sea. I started it, got interrupted, put it back on the shelf, and never finished it. Time to pick it up again!

You can read the book Dragon Sea by Frank Pope, it's very interesting. I don't have it at hand but I remember that as they cleaned the pieces they labeled each one. For auction several small jarlets were packed into lots. The number of the single jarlet has nothing to do with the lot number.

I know of butterflied auctions but never dealt with them.
Perhaps the best thing to do here is to contact them directly and see if they can help you.

Good morning,

I am hoping someone can help me with this: each of the Hoi An pieces auctioned by Butterfield's back in 2000 had a sticker with inventory number attached.

I have the Butterfields catalogues, but do not see a correlation between the catalogue numbers of the lots and the numbers on the stickers. For instance, my jarlet with sticker #16848 does not come from either lot 168 or 1684. It probably comes from one of the lots of similar jarlets in lots 463 to 495. Each of these lots consisted of a number of items -- for instance, lot #464 was comprised of thirty jarlets, most of which are not pictured.

Is there a list somewhere listing those individual numbers, all 250,000 or so of them? Or a key to matching the sticker numbers with the lot number?

As always, thanks so much!
