I got a couple of quotes for restoration at around $300 so I was happy to accept Christie’s offer. The set is that Batavian brown color that originated in the Ming Dynasty. Until I saw this set a couple of months ago, I didn’t know that this style of decoration was used with garniture sets. The dark pink decorative banding shows up on some of the other 18th century examples. I think it looks particularly striking against the dark brown glaze. It always makes me happy to locate other examples similar to mine when doing research on anything in my collection. I feel this set is likely Yongzheng/early Qianlong even though Christie’s just described the set as 18th century.

William,

I am so terribly sorry yours was damaged in shipping, its a stunning set, and in my opinion you got a great buy. I remember when I first posted mine you told me about a set that didn't sell, it seems it just has to be the right circumstances with these. Just a random question, is it more a russet or rust rather than Batavian Brown?

As far as I know bowls weren't part of the garniture sets, though I am far from an expert. For me I have been trying to piece together a few collections by pattern. This bowl and garniture just seemed to need to be together, and now looking at them together I'm glad I went with it. I do think the bowl is a level above the others but its nice to see how the progression of the export patterns played out.

I wish you luck with the restoration of yours, for now mine are getting a "Jeremy repair" so I can just enjoy them.

Cheers,

So I recently have added to my collection this wonderful large bowl, a bit earlier than the garniture which I have been slowly repairing.

The bowl is definitely earlier, though still in this pattern, which I am sure has a name but seems to me to be a Fitzhugh border with central famille rose bouquet filled urns. I quite like the pattern. I thought I would offer a side by side comparison of the two, giving a timeline of sorts. The cobalt certainly changes, the quality is quite different, I just think its rather interesting. I think the bowl falls into the late 18th while the others are maybe 1800-1820.

I'm sure I will be adding more, to the collection, as I would love a full display.

Cheers,
