Oh I accidentally deleted my own post... 😂

Anyway this plate is definitely Japanese circa Meji period 1868-1912.

The tell tale signs are the way the mark is written, blue outer circle and the spur marks.

Spur marks are normally only seen on Japanese porcelain and only up tiil the Taisho period 1912-26.

You will notice that the mark (I have circled it for you) has a dot. This is by a Japanese hand only.

Yes, Japanese. I think Meiji Period.

On a side note. My grandfather was also in China up until the end of WWII, in Shanghai. He was John Benjamin Penniston. He was a teacher at a university and an underground journalist. But he died at 76....so not the same person. Was your grandfather in the military?

I found this in my late 98 year old Grandpa's basement. As far as I know he was only in China in 1945-46. However, this seems to be a Japanese plate, with 2 spur marks and an unknown reign mark. Can you help with date or any comments? What is the outer design with red? Most similar marks are all blue.
