I recently purchased this dish that looks and feels 18th century. It is 22 cm in diameter and has a brown dressed rim. Body is completely undecorated apart from the bluish glaze with small imperfections and grooves in porcelain body clearly visible under the glaze. Has anyone ever seen anything like it?
It certainly looks 18th century. I wonder if it is a blank that was shipped out to be decorated in Europe?
Interesting also, is the brown dressed rim, I would have assumed the blanks would have been truly blank.
Jeremy
Cool! I like it. Certainly an 18th c. Chinese blank meant for export to Europe. Ships needed these large cheap orders for ballast, whereas European workshops made it their business to enamel the high-quality Chinese porcelain. I don't remember the exact figure, but it was a very large percentage of porcelain shipped to Europe were blanks. I will have to check my books again and see.
Given that these can still be found, buyers of Chinese export must be wary now. I've never seen one in person, but I've bought fakes on accident using these blanks with modern/later enamelling. For example, I recently bought a teacup and saucer of 18th c. Chinese porcelain, but a much later decorated (I suspect very late 20th c.) design of the royal arms of Great Britain.
@bartholin Good reminder, thanks! I forget about the whole mix and match phenomenon. One of these days when people can time travel, we might then start seeing 20th C plates being decorated by 18th C artists. Now that is really going to complicate things for us.
@william Thank you William, that is a wonderful cobalt blue. I asked because I remember an old thread that discussed Japanese applying a brown dressing to the rim, good to know the Chinese did as well.
Blank porcelain was enamel decorated in England from around the 1740’s.
James Giles or Gilles in London advertised his decorating business from 1750,and others were also in business.
They are highly sought after and can be more valuable than purely Chinese porcelain.
These wares are not to be confused with ‘clobbered’ porcelain, which is an embellishment of already decorated Chinese porcelain.

Thank you for all your comments. I've read about porcelain blanks in Geoffrey Goddens' book but never actually seen one until now. What a cool piece of history!
I have several pieces with this hallmark “Hall of Respectful Awe”
