This arrived from Pennsylvania, teacup has a hairline crack, saucer is perfect, is it 18th century because the cup does not have a handle? Did this common pattern continue into the 19th century? I know I have seen this pattern in a portrait, but I will have to try to find the illustration. Thank you. Sharon

@lotusblack Thank you Brian, found the illustration but she is holding a different pattern, it is a fluted handleless teacup with a floral spray decoration not a basket.
Hi Sharon! I like your teacup and saucer! I am also ecstatic to see you post about Chinese export. It is very nice - it reminds me of the bouquet-filled urn decoration we saw on Jeremy's garniture vase set. I wonder if it's a variation on that?Â

I checked the armorial book, which helps with dating border decorations. I couldn't find this exact border in it, but it would be classified as "later bands and lines", which generally date to 1750-1800. I would say it is late Qianlong c. 1785-1795. Very cool!Â

Here is the cropped illustration from Art of the Old South by Jessie J. Poesch. I no longer have the book, but I copied this detail, in any case, not the same, the memory is a trickster and the older you get, the more games it plays. The subject of this portrait descends from the same Virginia ancestor as self, the itinerant painter did her no favors. He did a good job on the cup and saucer. She looked vaguely like Bob Hope in a bonnet. What worries me about the saucer of my set, is the indentation on the back of the saucer that looks like a number 1, could be a pattern number, but I do not know if the Chinese would have placed a pattern numeral or even if it is a numeral. I noticed that. I wondered if they might be English, maybe Vic will know if he looks in.
@julia It was sold as Chinese, but I'm fine if it is English, I did not notice that mark until my husband photographed it outside (it was overcast that morning), which may have helped with the 1 showing.
As I said, I am not sure as sometimes it is hard for me to tell. Maybe a close-up of the foot rim may help. Also, possibly the 1 was carved in afterwards, in which case there won't be any glaze in the incision. You may be able to check that with a loupe. Of course, it may just look like a number but be nothing of the sort. 😊Â

New Hall is English hard paste porcelain from the late 18th to 1st quarter 19th c and just beyond.
Very hard to tell for definite whether yours is English or Chinese,as the enamels are very similar and the patterns become more simple and non Chinese in decorative style.
@shine Yes, it is remarkably similar except for the border pattern and the basket on the New Hall seems better defined, the wavy single line with dots mid decoration seems the same. Not sure who was copying who, New Hall copying Chinese or another English potter copying New Hall. Thank you Vic for posting the New Hall, I'm happy either way, as long as it is not hot off the kiln. It is quite a continental looking 1 so I suppose it could equally be from the continent? Or it could indeed be Chinese. Is the foot rim glazed over?
