Warren Cohen: "The Golden Age of East Asian Art Collecting -- and After"
March 16, 2012, Warren I. Cohen, Distinguished University Professor Emeritus of History, University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and Senior Scholar, Asia Program, Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, Washington, D.C. gives his lecture "The Golden Age of East Asian Art Collecting -- and After" for the symposium 'The Dragon and the Chrysanthemum: Collecting Chinese and Japanese Art in America' organized by the Center for the History of Collecting at The Frick Collection, March 15-16, 2012.
It's an interesting look back. His comments about Prof. Langdon Warner were very amusing. He is the real-life guy Steven Spielberg developed much of the central character of Indian Jones for Raiders of the Lost Arc. Langdon lived very near my home, just across the bay actually. 30 years ago I bought and still have a bowl from his collection with his label still on it. He died in the 1950's, his daughter, however, kept the house into the 1980's on Argilla Road in Ipswich MA. He was and remains a very controversial person.
The foundation of the MFA's Asian art collection is also controversial.
